The Drinks of Mad Men - cont.

The recipes and proportions are direct from AMC's site. Continued from Page 1.

white russian drink

White Russian

  • 1 oz vodka
  • 1/2 oz coffee liqueur (Kahlua)
  • 1 oz milk

The odd spy case nothwithstanding, the White Russian is a drink whose name probably elicited quite some emotion in the times of the Cold War. Pulled a minor change in substituting whole milk for heavy cream. As such, it's 173 calories and 50% effient, though this is a dense drink -- the Mad Men serving size is less than a double shot.

screwdriver drink

Screwdriver

  • 2 oz vodka
  • 4 oz orange juice

Quite the classic, in part because it can be prepared with a mixer that is already in many people's homes. The screwdriver checks in at 184 calories and 70% efficiency. It allegedly gets its name from Americans working in an Iranian oil factory in the 50s who would pour vodka into cans of OJ and stir with their screwdrivers.

bloody mary cocktail

Bloody Mary

  • 1 1/2 oz vodka
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp horseradish
  • 4 oz tomato (V8) or clamato juice
  • 4 dashes Tabasco sauce
  • Celery salt
  • Fresh ground pepper
  • Salt

How about that for detail -- Thanks AMC! Surely the pre-mixed Bloody Marys we see today don't have that sort of TLC in their preparation. Just running the numbers on the vodka and tomato juice yields 80% efficiency, 122 calories and 3 days' worth of sodium intake.

mint julep

Mint Julep

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 8 sprigs of mint
  • 1 tsp of sugar

The Mint Julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. Basically, it's bourbon that's been a bit watered down with ice and a little bit of sugar. This version is 160 calories and 90% efficient, but I highly doubt the ladies in their fancy hats at the Derby are drinking this Mint Julep. Adding more sugar and perhaps some water would make this much more palatable.
